On-Page SEO Fundamentals: What Actually Matters in 2026
On-page SEO isn't dead. It's just been reduced to the handful of things that genuinely matter. Here's the shortlist — and how to get each one right.
Updated 5 July 2026
The title tag is still king
Your title tag is what shows up as the blue link in search results and in the browser tab. It's the single biggest on-page ranking factor and the single biggest driver of click-through.
Keep it under 60 characters, put the primary keyword near the front, and finish with your brand. 'Emergency Boiler Repair Colchester — 24/7 | RIOT Heating' beats 'Welcome to RIOT Heating Ltd, Est 1987'.
Meta descriptions sell the click
Meta descriptions don't directly affect ranking, but they hugely affect whether people click. Google will rewrite yours if it doesn't like it — so write one worth keeping.
155 characters, active voice, mention the outcome or offer, end with an implicit or explicit call to action.
One H1, then a real structure
Every page needs exactly one H1 — the visible page headline. Then H2s for major sections, H3s inside them. This isn't just for accessibility; it's how search engines and AI Overviews carve up your content.
Internal linking is your secret weapon
Every time you link from one page on your site to another using descriptive anchor text, you tell Google what that page is about. Most small sites do almost none of this.
Rule of thumb: every new blog post should link to 2–3 relevant existing pages, and every existing page should get one new inbound link a month. Compound interest for SEO.
Schema markup for the pages that matter
Structured data (schema.org) tells Google explicitly what a page is — a product, a service, an article, a review. It doesn't always change ranking, but it can unlock rich results (stars, prices, FAQ dropdowns) that dramatically increase click-through.
- LocalBusiness schema on your homepage and contact page
- Service schema on each service page
- Article schema on blog posts
- FAQPage schema anywhere you answer common questions
- Review / AggregateRating where you have real, verifiable reviews
